THE HIMEBAUGHS -- NINE GENERATIONS AND TWO-HUNDRED, FIFTY YEARS IN AMERICA
SIXTH GENERATION

42. Truman SQUIER was born on 4 Sep 1799 in Vermont (prob. Ferrisburg, Addison Co.). (149) He died on 16 Jan 1861 in Lorain County, OH. (150) He was buried in S. Murray Ridge Cem, Carlisle Twp, OH. (151) He was married to Gitty VAN OSDALE PROB. 1824.

(I first discovered Truman Squier, his name that is, tucked away on a book shelf in the last home of Cora (Swan) Himebaugh, his great-granddaughter. He had penned his signature several times on the front and back cover pages of an old school book dated, ____. With the aid of genealogy researcher, Dale C. Kellogg, in Loraine County, Ohio, the following information was compiled on his family and that of his parents, through records of his mother’s application for a widows revolutionary war pension.—Jane Himebaugh, 1984)

Truman Squier was born in Vermont (probably Ferrisburg, Addison County) on September 4, 1799, according to his tombstone inscription, the son of Betsey (Pangborn) and Ezra Squier. His wife, Gitty Van Osdale, was born in New York State in 1806 as established by the 1850 federal census.

According to the 1850 Ohio census dated November 2, Truman Squier and his wife Gitty were residing on their farm in Elyria Township, and Margarett Van Osdale, presumably Gitty’s mother, lived in the home; the real estate being valued at a modest 700 dollars. Six children were living then, and all were born in Ohio. They were Mary Elizabeth, Margarett A., Egbert, Harriet, Adeline, and Malvina.

The 1830 census places Truman living in Elyria Township, Loraine County, Ohio with his wife and two daughters under the age of five, Mary Elizabeth and Margarett, according to their ages. We can thus assume that Mary Elizabeth was the only child that had married and left home at the time of the 1850 census, for she was married in Elyria on October 28, 1849 to Hiram Alexander Swan. Egbert, the only son, was helping his father till the land, given his occupation, and that of this father, as being a farmer.

Since all the children were born in Ohio, Truman and Gitty probably relocated here in Loraine County shortly after their marriage, possibly in 1824. The earliest deed is November 22, 1830 when he purchased from Heman Ely (original owner of the township) 15 acres in Lot 16, Elyria township west of the river, for $75.00. His second purchase on December 27, 1832 was for 20 acres in Lot 17 from Clark Eldred for $90.00. [Deeds: C:246, E:291].

This 35 acre farm lies on West Ridge Road with the home on the east side of the road which angles through the tract (see map attached). Then on October 27, 1866, Gitty, alone, sold to William E. Squier, her son, for the amount of $2,500.00 the 35 acres of Lots 16 and 17 providing that he would maintain her, and pay $100.00 to each of his sisters; Elizabeth Swan, Margaret A. Thorp, Harriet Gleason, Adeline Squires and Malvina Cemans. [Deeds: 25:446].

Truman died on January 16, 1861 at the age of 61 according to his tombstone inscription, age 61y 4m 12d, and is buried in the South Murry Ridge Cemetery, Carlisle Township, Loraine County, Ohio. No record of Gitty’s death has been found.
